  • Reminder about illegal file sharing

Dear Residents,

Residential Computing Resources would like to remind you that online file sharing of copyrighted material is against the law and will result in your loss of access to the internet within Student Housing.

Campus IT monitors the network 24/7 and blocks access when either of the following is detected:

    a) a computer is actively sharing a file (you are either downloading copyrighted material illegally or your file sharing software is uploading copyrighted material from your computer to other users)
    b) a computer has been infected by a virus which tries to spread itself through the Student Housing network

In case your computer has been blocked from the network, we can get you back on after the following procedure:

    1) Bring your computer to building 6, room 107. We will verify that you have indeed been blocked.
    2) We will uninstall any file sharing software on your computer.
    3) Once your computer has been cleaned, we will email campus IT to unblock you. Please allow 1-3 business days to regain internet access. Repeat violations will be turned over to the Student Housing judicial officer and could result in severe sanctions, including expulsion from the university.

It is easy to prevent being blocked from the Student Housing network: don’t install or use any file sharing software like LimeWire or BitTorrent. During the last academic year we have had over 240 students blocked from the Student Housing network because of illegal file sharing.

If you obtain your music online, please do so legally by using software like iTunes, which lets you purchase copyrighted content and download it to your computer. If you’re not paying for music or movies, it’s most likely illegal. You can easily be sued for hundreds of thousands of dollars by the RIAA and MPAA for downloading copyrighted content.

Sincerely,

Residential Computing Resources
